What did one talent manager say to the other?
On episode 18 of The Racket House Podcast I spoke to Helen Gutierrez who is the co-founder of Straight Edge Entertainment Group, an artist management agency.
Though we met online through the power of social media our conversation revealed we have more in common than we thought. Particularly how we think about artists progressing in their careers. Here are 3 things we wholeheartedly agreed on:
1.) Your brand is everything. It's more important than you realize. Music and talent are important, but it will only get you so far. Your brand is what makes people remember you, connect with you, and choose you over the thousands of other artists out there.
Tip: Think of your brand as the story, values, and vibe you want people to feel every time they hear your name, and make sure every song, post, and interaction reflects that consistently.
2.) If you're an emerging artist, posting at least daily is crucial. It's how you stay connected with fans, keep your name top of mind, and show the journey as it unfolds. Consistent posting builds familiarity and trust, which turns casual listeners into loyal supporters who stick with you long term. It also teaches the algorithm who to push your content to. It's a numbers game.
Tip: Batch shoot content once a week so you have a steady flow of posts ready to go without scrambling each day.
3.) Just do the damn thing. While this can apply to anything, it's especially true for artists putting in the work. Inputs lead to outputs. Fortune favors the bold. The universe rewards risk takers. You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take.
Tip: Stop waiting for perfect conditions, start now with what you have, and figure it out as you go.
