3 Lessons from the Trenches
Though my mission is to help as many artists as possible, I’m an artist myself. Thus I have a unique perspective on things. Here are 3 lessons I’ve personally been reminded of with my own experience.
Lesson 1: Promote yourself everywhere
Got shows coming up? Post about them. Bookers want to see it. Fans want to see it. If you are not telling people, how will they know?
Example: Before my recent Chicago gig I posted a few times. I was direct support, but a fan of the headliner saw my post and liked my IG. So she came early to check me out and stayed for my set. We chatted after and she said she was impressed. This is why you need to promote yourself and stay consistent. Shout out Miss Dee, you rock.
Lesson 2: Bring your A game and stay true to your brand
Not only should you release music you love, but you should also perform like it's a sold out arena. You never know who's watching.
Example: Same Chicago gig, a 57 year old House music fan showed up right at the start of my set and stayed the entire 2.5 hours. He came alone (sans wife and kids) just for the music and couldn't say enough good things. That meant a lot. Thank you to my new friend Scott! He even texted me after and said "you are awesome". Damn that feels good...
Lesson 3: Invest in playlist campaigns
Playlists with engaged listeners can skyrocket your streams.
Example: My biggest streaming jumps have come from landing on playlists with tens or hundreds of thousands of followers. It works.
